Michael Jackson
“One learns more from failure than from success”. In some
senses, Michael Jackson, Chairman of Elderstreet Investments,
should know.
During the past 19 years he has specialised in raising finance
and investing in the smaller companies sector, making over
70 investments both as a business angel and as a venture capitalist.
In addition to his role at Elderstreet, Michael is a director
and investor in many other quoted and unquoted companies,
including Planit Holdings PLC, Netstore PLC Computer Software
Group and Micromuse Inc.
Without doubt some of Michael’s investments have been spectacularly
successful – take for example the growth in value of The Sage
Group, of which Michael is both the Chairman and one of the
original angel investors, from just £1m in 1983 to its current
level of over £2bn.
However, early experiences both as an investor and an entrepreneur
proved to Michael that venture capital is not for the faint-hearted.
During his talk he will outline some of the dangers that business
angels must avoid or, if they fall prey to, learn from if
they wish to increase their chances of investment success.
Michael will also address some of his experiences in realising
investments, for example the selling of Elderstreet to Kleinwort
Benson in 2000 before buying it back in 2003…
