MICHAEL JACKSON TO RETELL HIS INVESTMENT HIGHS AND LOWS AT GEIF BREAKFAST BRIEFING - October 04

A story of 'smash hits and spectacular failures' will feed the appetite of business angels when they gather at the Great Eastern Investment Forum breakfast meeting on 20 October in Cambridge, to hear Michael Jackson, Chairman of Sage Group plc, Elderstreet Investments and a long time business angel, talk about some of his personal highs and lows as investor and entrepreneur.

Michael Jackson, guest speaker at the next GEIF breakfast meeting, believes that early experiences of failure have taught him far more than his successes. "From my experience I think it's better to have had a major flop at the beginning because it teaches you that the game, both as an investor and entrepreneur, is not as easy as it looks on the outside. The mistakes I made in the early part of my investment career gave me the steep learning curve I needed to ensure my future success. It's really important to use failure in a positive way in order to bounce back and I look forward to sharing my experiences with fellow investors and entrepreneurs."

Many of Mr. Jackson's investments have been astonishingly successful, such as the growth in value of The Sage Group from just £1m in 1983 to its current level of over £2bn. But he is not a believer in always rushing to exit the successful investment. He remains a director and major shareholder in many companies he has backed including at least three quoted companies.

Andrea Blakesley, a director of GEIF said, "Michael Jackson has experienced the highs and lows from both sides of the fence and attendees will benefit from hearing about some of the dangers they should avoid to increase their investment success."

GEIF, part of the NW Brown Group, has worked with hundreds of early stage companies seeking expansion capital from its business angel members. The group also has a £5 million co-investment fund, GEIF Ventures, established in order to co-invest alongside Great Eastern Investment Forum business angels into promising businesses. Events such as the regular Breakfast Meetings and Presentation Days are part of GEIF's ongoing campaign, 'On the side of the angels', designed to demystify the activities of business angels, to encourage new angel investors and to support the existing angel investment community.
